I am always a sucker for expensive, luxurious skincare. When I first came across Argentum Apothecary’s La Potion Infinie, I was basically salivating to get my paws on it, especially after reading all the rave reviews about it all over the web. It boasts a 99.5% nature derived ingredients – the star of the cream being Silver Hydrosol and DNA HP. La Potion Infinie promises a reduction of breakouts by regulating the skin’s flora, and an increase of the skin’s hydration by carrying 10,000 times its weight in water. 

But I’m sad to say that, this cream is not for me.

I really wanted it to work. So much so that I even went ahead and bought the full size (yes, with my own money) after I’ve tried the samples from their website. Whilst the price of the samples has justified the performance for the cream, the truth is that the price of the full size jar really doesn’t. At least not on my skin anyway.

Now, let us take a step back and I’ll explain to you the story of my skin. I have dry, almost dehydrated skin, that is also oily on the T-zone. Yes, how is this possible you ask? Well, during my teenage years, I over abused the use of benzoyl peroxide in a vain attempt to get rid of the acne and closed comedones on my on my forehead. Only later on did I find out that my acne is due to dry skin and that my attempts with using so much drying acne treatments actually fueled my breakouts. Ouch. Now, years later, I have a a forehead full of dehydrated lines that needs constant powdering. I also suffer from eczema on my eyelids and have dry patches around my nose. As a result I am constantly in search of something that will combat dry skin, but is also mattifying and maybe a little anti-ageing. That’s why La Potion Infinie sounded just perfect.

Anyway, enough of the sob story, now back to the review. I have used this cream for around 2 months. It first came through the post in my haul from Cult Beauty – it came in a beautiful packaging and an archetype card. I received THE SAGE card. A quick check on the website, I am left with this insightful quote for my archetype: “Through observing truth you will attain enlightenment from inner wisdom and without attachment. Focus on the power of nature and share your esoteric knowledge.” I love how the La Potion Infinie is marketed. Although every jar of La Potion Infinie is the same, the archetype card makes it seem like it is made uniquely for you.

The Pros:

La Potion Infinie smells amazing. It smells like herbs heaven – if you like the smell of figs and ferns, you will love this. If they ever come out with a perfume, I probably will go out of my way to get it. The cream has a wonderful consistency, and it definitely feels as expensive as it costs. Better yet, it comes in a luxurious black glass jar to keep the cream fresh.

The cream itself is nice to put on and drys matte on the skin. Furthermore, it actually feels like it is stretching out the skin – almost similar to the feeling you get when using a cleanser that is too drying for your face. Perhaps this is the so-called “anti-aging, tightening effect” that many experienced with the cream. To be fair, I do feel that this could be a great cream for those with oily skin – it is definitely a great primer as it does do a good job at evening out the skin tone. I do believe that my pores look smaller when I am using this cream.

The Cons:

For those with dry or dehydrated skin, who is planning to buy this cream for the claims of delivering intense hydration – don’t bother, this cream is not for you. I had to put on another cream over the top of this one lest I wake up with very dry and uncomfortable skin.

On the other hand, this cream is not rich enough to be used as a serum or treatment. It does give my skin a soft, even texture, but trust me, the result is not good enough to warrant £147.

Although silver is said to be great on breakouts due to its antiseptic properties, I did experience breakouts over the two months of using the cream, and I felt that the cream did nothing to combat my breakouts. I still had to use my normal acne treatments. In fact, I experienced much calmer skin after I switched to Antipodes’ Avocado Pear Nourishing Night Cream.

Would I repurchase this product? Nope.

Whilst La Potion Infinie definitely has its virtues, it is definitely too drying for my skin and the Pros do not outweigh the price. Looks like the search for my perfect, all natural cream continues!
